system configuration manager

By eagleabj ·
My computer bots to win98 screen and stops. It will not boot to safe mode. When I use step-by-step confirmation I get an error message "system configuration manager failed to run" and "configuration specified in config.sys file is too large for memory. Remove some drivers and try again". When I try to run scandisk.exe or scanreg.exe, I get an error message,"error in exe file". How can I restore this system?

Can you boot to a DOS prompt? If so, during the boot, hit F5 and break so that you just drop to the prompt. Rename config.sys to something else [like config.bak - if there isn't one already] and reboot.

This will give you a chance to boot normally and do some more troubleshooting.

CONFIG.SYS not needed for Win98

You can boot to DOS by pressing F8 or CTRL
before the "Starting Windows 98" screen appears, then select option 5
for Command Prompt. Once at the C:\ prompt you can type:

ren config.sys config.old
or
ren config.sys config.001

Config.sys is not required to boot Windows 98.
