System_save that ate Compaq Presario har

Anyone have any experience with Compaq's System_save function. We just bought a 1255 notebook and its 4gb drive has 1.9gb free for drive C: after System_save created its partition. Some safety valve, huh?

A Windows 95/98 based computer needs only 3 files to boot to a C:\, they are COMMAND.COM and two hidden files IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. There are also 4 configuration files common to these units, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI. In addition, there are two more configuration files, SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT, which are referred to as the Registry.

If there is some corruption to any of these files or incorrect entries, then you may experience a variety of errors when attempting to boot your computer.

Compaq provides a backup copy of your configuration files in a hidden directory: C:\SYSTEM.SAV. You can copy over one or all of these files to correct an error. You may want to do this one file at a time to determine which file is causing problems.

WARNING - This will take you back to the configuration you had when you purchased the computer, and will not have any configuration settings for the programs you have added. You may need to reinstall them.

It is also possible that your hardrive is bad or partitioned incorrectly. Try using FDISK to see if you have your whole drive allocated for use.
