task manager stuck on processes

By Seadogs ·
I am having a problem with task manager in NT4.0 sp5 When I logon as myself, an ordinary user, and start taskmanager, it displays only the processes window. The taskbar shows a blank area which does not say Windows taskmanager as it usually does with the little pc screen. If you right click on it no options appear. In the corner is a small box that you can right click on to close the processes box but that is all. I would like to get to the regular task manager so you can access the tasks and other menus. On this same pc I can logon as administrator and the task manager works fine. I made a shortcut so I could be sure I was accessing the same one both ways. I have tried restarting the computer with no results. Any suggestions on how to get out of this loop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

It sounds like that your workstation is getting a policy that is locking the task Manager out for users. Start regedit.exe and look in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Policies\System\DisableTaskMgr
Options: 1=Enable0=Disable

This may change back to 1 when you logon again depending if it is in the domain policy. If it is, you can use poledit.exe to change the policy.

To administer your NT, you need admin rights. Task manager is an administrative tool.

So my suggestion will be to assign admin rights to your own user account and log back in as yourself. It should be ok.

This is a setting that can be changed from within Task Manager. If you double-click on the grey area to the left of "End Task", it removes the Menu Bar at the top and also the tabs that allow you to switch between Applications, Processes and Performance. You can also change it back by double-clicking on the same area.

I had this before and it was really annoying me for about 30mins until I realised what I had done.

Thanks a ton. I knew I wasn't crazy but now I feel a lot like an idiot
