TCP/IP

By fcrammond ·
I recently started working here and have a small peer to peer setup using tcp/ip. There are 10 computers, 1 printer, 3 hubs, and 1 jetdirect. Recently one of the computers lost the connection to the network. The setup looks ok (all the computers arethe same and the setups are the same, I can ping everything on the network but cannot see anything in the windows world. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll assume you are using Win9x.
You can ping everything using IP. Sounds like a name resolution or browse service failure. Probably the quickest way to resolve it is to uninstall 'client for MS networks' then reinstall it.

If the workgroups are exactly the same, I think I would try mapping a drive to another machine using UNC mapping (e.g. net use c: \\machine2\c$ ) and see if that works. If it does, you just have a browsing issue and uninstalling and re-installing TCP/IP may or may not fix it.

If UNC mapping does not work, then I agree with the first answer that an un-install and re-install of the TCP/IP stack is a good place to start. It's inelegant and really never answers the question of what happened, but it works often enough to make it worth a try.
