Terminal Services Issue

By d.jones092 ·
Hello All. I am trying to get a new Win2k server running, and am attempting to install the latest Windows Updates from the MS site. The first update that wants to install is the Cumulative Patch for IE 6. When the patch tries to install, I get a message saying "Terminal Server must be in "install" mode to continue. If you are running in install mode, click yes. If not click cancel". I attempted to click yes and the update still did not install.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for any info.

Hey,

I have had this issue with other Windows Updates. Try downloading the update and installing it. That is the only way I have been able to do some updates on TS.

Thanx

Hey,

Should have asked. Are you running Terminal Services and are you in install mode?

Installing Service Packs from Terminal Server Client Sessions
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition

This article was previously published under Q215465
SUMMARY
This article describes Microsoft policy on the installation of Service Packs from within Terminal Server client sessions.
MORE INFORMATION
Any application that is going to have a system-wide impact should be installed in the following manner:

Install at the Terminal Server console (session 0).
Install under the administrtive security context.
Place server in install mode.
Installation of Service Packs from within any session other than session 0 is not supported. Adverse effects may occur if Service Packs are not installed from the console session. You may have to reinstall the operating system to correct any problems. This has been fixed for Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3. Microsoft supports installation of SP3 on Windows 2000.

So, that is the offical word. Don't do service pack updates (or patches) in a TS window. Do them from the server console session itself.

Now, putting TS in Install mode is easy also. Please read Technet article 320185 on that:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320185

hope this helps
