Just Pi$$ed off at being unable to find or follow anything now.
It’s easier to ignore the Trolls and Twits who want to treat TR as a Open Ended Help Forum for their personal needs.
Sometimes their silly responses are even related to Computer Technology.
Actually not so long ago one of the prolific Spammers was high up on the Top 100 List so they accept anyone on that list Jaqui. :p

I love how Off-Topic is now called “Water Cooler”, and has only a small link to direct you to it as well as no “hottest” or “newest” tab like the regular forum.
It’s almost like we’re the “red-headed stepchild” now on here.
Nice to see you back BTW, jaqui. Hope things are good for you.

I think the off-topic discussions kept folks coming back to TR after they viewed the technology articles/questions. Now, the off-topic discussions are shoved in a corner?

Exactly

In reply to I know!
I remember one corp I used to work at, “water cooler chit-chat” was a managerial term for people who stopped and talked a lot about non-business things.
“We need to keep down the water cooler chit-chat” was something mentioned in meetings. It didn’t matter if you’d had no breaks or lunch, you were expected to keep it to the minimum “in the halls” (meaning not at your cube/office).
I know this (Jason…if you’re reading, make a point of this):
I came here because of the off-topic. I found some of the stuff Bill, Mark, , Toni, et. al., to be useful. But, the tech folks I found here that I could socialize with in the old format was fine. You didn’t need to make a huge interface change to make it look like a social networking site to make TechRepublic more social. And, segregating your off-topic (probably your most active single area) really was a bad move.
“The Powers That Be” may want TechRepublic to be more tech-oriented, but alienating your most active group of users by basically exiling them into their own dungeon is no way to keep them…and definitely is no way to attract people who are looking for a site they feel comfortable using.
After all, how many of the TechRepublic event attendees were not active off-topic posters?
Time to rethink the gameplan here.

On the old system it was nice to be able to see that the poster is:
From Freakbakistan, therefore not speaking English real well.
Listed as a ‘student’, asking some complex routing
question (Homework…helloooo).Listed as CIO, so obviously knows nothing about IT.
Listed as ‘retired’ so we would cut them some slack.
But now we cannot tell who is the lazy student and who is the retired grandmother…..

It’s too cumbersome.
by charliespencer · about 13 years, 1 month ago
In reply to THAT SUCKS!!!
It’s now too clunky to locate the new content in a discussion. There’s no ‘NEW’ tag any more. I’ve come to realize that is my biggest complaint. Combine that with the discussion levels not being indented as far from the left as they were and the lack of the old ‘dotted line’ tree branches, and following a discussion isn’t worth it after the first fifty or so posts.
As I noted earlier, it’s eliminated the ‘7 level’ problem; no one goes that deep anymore. I’m only here two or three days a week now, and I’m still routinely in the top 10.

comes from the “discussions’ being a blogging engine set to allow discussions on posts.
a poor substitute for an actual forum script.-

Consumer Help Desk vs IT Professionals/ Discussions
by cg it · about 13 years, 1 month ago
In reply to THAT SUCKS!!!
The vast majority of questions in Q&A are help desk questions so my participation is almost zero. Not a help desk end user technician, Microsoft Office help desk technician, or any form of technician helping end users.
Even if there’s some question about servers, mail servers, or the lot, I can tell their not legitimate.. anyone that’s worked even a little, with servers, mail servers at all could answer them.
The days of “jack of all trade” IT people is over… specialists abound and they go to the specialists web sites.
I was never a big discussion poster, but I do agree, was far easier following a discussion when you could see the tree and find new posts.
While I like the front page, I think relevent content to IT Pros is missing. Click on VoIP and what do you get? not a lot of useful information, either for the novice, intermediate or advanced IT person. .Click on virtualization..what do you get? same thing.
just my 2 cents

I don’t know why, but every time I try to post a discussion, it doesn’t take. The button doesn’t work. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m using IE7. I can reply to discussions with no problem, but not start a thread.

AV it could be to do with IE7
by hal 9000 · about 13 years, 1 month ago
In reply to Is anyone having this problem?
A lot of places are no longer supporting it as a Web Browser.
I know Google Docs require at least Infernal Exploder 8 or newer.
Something to do with the Standards that M$ applied that no one else knew about at the time. 😉

IE7 really isn’t that old that it should be unsupported on TR. I know I’m not the only that uses it though, so maybe that could have something to do with the low amount of posts on the site. If IE7 is unsupported, TR should say so.
I’ve just been lazy about doing the upgrade. I wiped my PC in January and have been slowly putting it back to its former glory.
I’m going to do that right now and see if I can post something new.

In reply to THAT SUCKS!!!
I upgraded from IE7 to IE8. After I did that, I tried to post to the Watercooler. It put me back to a “do you want to register on TR” screen. I logged in and instead and it took my credentials, but my post was gone. I put it in again and tried to submit it, but it did the same thing. Then I decided to post my thread on the main screen instead of the Watercooler. It looked like it took the post, but even after refreshing it wasn’t there. A few minutes later it showed up. I wasn’t able to expand the tags at all, so there are none.
TR really has to wake up to the problems we’re experiencing here. Where is the Feedback category when you need it.

I had that happen when I was using IE9 yesterday
by hal 9000 · about 13 years, 1 month ago
In reply to Ok, heres what happened
But I think it was more to do with a Bug on the site that was being worked on. When I came back with a half way decent OS XP the same post was showing 3 or 4 times but I still couldn’t add anything that showed.
Then a couple of hours latter everything that I posted was showing.

by charliespencer · about 13 years, 1 month ago
In reply to Ok, heres what happened
I can’t detect a pattern, but sometimes when I’m posting a reply I get nagged for username and password when I’ve been logged on for hours already. I’m always able to get on successfully, but it happens at least very other day.
I’m also seeing discussions that don’t appear updated when I reopen them until I refresh. I see both of these behaviors in FF 3.6
