The Back Button in Internet Explorer

By joe.mitchell ·
How do I control the behaviour of the Back Button in Internet Explorer 4+? I need to be able to hardcode a URL at a certain time. This will enable me to force the application to go back to a certain page. This will not necessarily be the previous page.

I'm not aware of your being able to control this without editing the program itself, which is illegal, and impossible since IE4+ resides on the the client's computer. What you will have to do is BOLDLY state on your web page NOT TO USE your browsers "back" button, then put your own button on the page for them to use and hard code that button to hyperlink to the page you want them to go to.

Why not spawn another browser window without a toolbar? That way the users wouldn't have to worry about which button they should or shouldn't press.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

I think you'll find that the back button gets its info from the history. As such it is impossible to "hard code" the back button unless you hack the program itself which is illegal. You don't say if this is for your own web site or just a feature you would like to have. If this is for your own web site then add a button onto the page with the link hardcoded.

I'm not 100% sure of what your trying to achieve but you could try using a javascript solution. You could open a new 'window', remove the toolbars and place your own buttons. You can use the 'history' keyword to replicate the actions of the back/forward buttons and some scripting should produce the desired effect. If you need me to expand let me know.
