The CMOS password does not work
Lockedby hulstart · about 22 years, 2 months ago
On a customer’s computer I repeatedly tried to set a password in the CMOS to lock the whole system. I can open the CMOS SETUP FACILITY, the PASSWORD SETTING and enter the password. This type give me the cice of the manager and user password. I may put in any pasword in either category and seva it to the CMOS, nothing happens, the computer ingonres it and starts normally. What do I do wrong or fail to do, any help is appreciated.

Setting the CMOS password, prohibits anyone without the password from entering the CMOS configuration setup, this does not apply to the system boot up process to enter Windows
You have set passwords to lockup the CMOS panel, that is all.-

To expand on what soulrider gave you.
On most motherboards, the password you can set in the BIOS settings only prohibits access to the BIOS setting program.
A few motherboards also have a system password that when enabled must be entered to boot the system. This is not common! I can’t remember the last MB I saw this feature on.
If you are looking to lock out unauthorized users, you have 2 choices;
Use Windows NT,
Or use a security utility that requires a password to boot the PC.-

Look for someplace where you select the password for system or setup. It is in a different place than where you set the password up.

On win95/98 and winME during the last part of the install, it will ask you to enter a users password, if left blank, this option no longer comes up. Even if you did enter a password, during the login on that machine, all one has to do is select cancel and one can still access the machine, they may not be able to access any network you happen to be on though. Win95/98/ME are not network operating systems and therefore do not have the security settings as winnt, win2k or winxp/pro have. If you choose winxp home version, you will still encounter the same problem.
Good luck!Mike

I found an extensive security tool from a link at http://www.nonags.com
http://www.softheap.com/secagent.html
I think this can do everything that you want.
I an sure that there are others out there, it is just a question of finding them.I see that a couple of people suggested you use the standard Windows password screen.
The standard Windows password only allows for minimal network security, and user profile changes. It will not keep unauthorized users from accessing the system.
I do notbelieve that this will not do what you want. All a user needs to do is close the Window, and they have full access to the PC.If I find a better, or a freeware utility, I will let you know.

Just a brief update.
I have seen a couple of motherboards recently that did have the ability to set a boot password. One had an option for security in the bios settings to set it for either operating system or BIOS.
Another had password option sections for both BIOS and User.
These are the first mb’s that I had seen with user password options in the last 3 years.
I don’t remember where I saw it, but I did see a registry edit to force the user to use the Windows logon.
You might look at http://www.aumha.org

Thanks. It appaers that maufacturers are putting a password utlity in the bios again. I have seen a recent motherboard 07-2001 with this feature. However it is not obvious. The in the setup of the BIOS there is password, making it sound as the password for the BIOS setup, hoever this opens a submenu which gives the choice or BIOS or system password.
