The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

After loggin on to Windows XP dos windows (with the title "c:\windows\system32\ntvdm.exe") appear cascaded on the sceen. And there is an error message "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0554 IP:040f OP:63 6f 6c 73 70. I'm using a Mecer laptop.

Try booting into "Safe Mode",

then running your antivirus scan. Many times this error pops up when a 16bit
program is trying to run outside the normal 16bit memory allotment. Some trojans
have been known to do this.
Other possible culprits are some automatic software updaters, like printer drivers
and such, that have become corrupted and may need to be re-downloaded and
installed. Another culprit is World of Warcraft installer/updater being corrupt.
Redownload the updater (if that is what is running) and try again.
But first, run the antivirus scan booted to safe mode!
