The RPC server is unavailable, Windows Server 2003.

By rdennis ·
Hello Everyone,

I've searched and found similar issues, but this one is interesting.

I am trying to remote desktop connect to a win2k3 server in our domain. When doing so I get the following error:

The RPC server is unavailable.

Please try again or consult your system administrator.

I was able to connect fine until today, the only changes have been an installation of SQL Server 2005 and a recruiting tool called WinSearch. The strange thing is I have mapped network drives on this particular server that I can access with no problem. Also, when I try to login locally to the server, it just hangs during the login process. I enter user name and password, and it hangs for about an hour.

Any ideas?

Thanks

SQL server is also running on our server, but local login has been working fine. I just can't remote in without getting the "RPC serve is unavailable" error.

Is the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper enabled? If this service is disabled, you are unable to remote desktop into the server.

RPC Server unavailable

I am having a similiar issue on my W2K3 SP2 Server however the TCP/IP service and RDP service are both running. I do not have any problems logging in at the console but I had to drive 550 miles to do so and have now installed VNC to gain access remotely.

RPC Server is unavailable when try to RDP

Try putting this registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

IgnoreRegUserConfigErrors =Dword:1

I had problem with one of my server after taking snapshot of server through Alteris. I had to call to Microsoft and they solved my issue putting this registry value.

Regedit worked

The regedit method worked for me, though it has taken quite long for the 'first' logoon post inserting key.

Thanks

The regedit trick does work, however domain login is very slow again. The DNS server is set as the primary.
