In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
Not only was Scott a long-time member of TechRepublic, but he was also someone I had befriended over the years. I will miss him greatly.
In June of 2008, I interviewed Scott in the TR Member Spotlight series. That’s how I will remember him… one heck of a good guy.

I’ve sent you a peermail Ron, I’m trying to co-ordinate a joint donation from many of the active gang here. If I’ve missed anyone, and I’m sure I have, they can peermail me.
Scott was well loved, and his quirky humour brightened our days.

In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
Scummy was one of the rebellious spirits that hooked me on TR. I felt honored, and part of the in-crowd whenever I got a comment, snipe, or even a “dumbas” reply in the Q&A or Forums.
He was just alittle too wild for some of the staff I guess, and he had not been around as much lately.
I think I just died a little too…..

I didn’t know him personally but I loved his sense of humor. His posts always made me smile. His passing is a huge loss for the TR family, this place just won’t be the same (especially his password reset posts 🙂 ).
Scott will be missed around here. Rest in Peace forever buddy. May the God of “the Church of The Scummy One” grant you every wish and comfort you desire.

I am not there. I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awake in the morning bush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starshine at night
Do not stand by my grave and cry

In reply to Very Sad Day Today
I’m in a choir preparing to go to Paris to sing at a celebration of anniversary ofthe Liberation of France.
One of the pieces we are preparing is “In Rememberence” by Eleanor Daley. It uses that poem. You can find it on Youtube – search on Daley and Rememberence. I highly recommend it. Don’t yet have a recording of my choir doing it.

A modest proposal
by jamesrl · about 14 years, 2 months ago
In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
I realise that some of us need to grieve and no one should be ashamed to take the time to do that.
But I’d also like to make a modest proposal. Namely that we find a way to remember Scott as he was; a funny, witty guy, who made lots of friends. I propose that whoever cares to participate, the collective we, start to go through his posts and collect the “best” of Scott, both the Scummy and the W2Ktechman sides. How we organize what we gather, I’m open to suggestions.

I just finished reading an email from Scott’s brother.
by ron k. · about 14 years, 2 months ago
In reply to A modest proposal
He expressed condolences to us all and asked for me to pass them on.
I sent him a rather lengthy reply this morning. His brother wants to read more of Scott’s posts and he’s going to play Scott’s TR podcast for the family.
I included tinyurl links to Scott’s profiles and explained how to navigate in them so that they can read everything that Scott posted.
I explained too how Scott’s friends are scattered around the globe and how we wish that we could be there with them now but beyond flowers, emails and whatnot it’s just not possible.
I told him what the number means next to Scott’s thumbsup picture, that he helped hundreds with technical questions and possibly hundreds more because not everyone marks an answer as helpful even though it was.
Scott’s presence is seemingly everywhere here at the moment. I have small spiral notebooks where I was keeping score against him at Facebook. I still have seeds he sent to my wife and I and perennials that will blossom again this year.
Missed? Oh yeah!-

I find that is was pretentious since it was well underhand by Ron K. prior to Hall9000 saying what he did. Wasn’t cool at all.
Col/Hal is my hero, but in this case not so much. I may be just too sensitive because I am just so upset about my other hero (THE SCUMMY ONE’s) passing. So if everyone else is okay with what was said I’ll just shutup……….

I don’t understand precisely what has upset you, and I did not mean to upset you further.
I am not seeing what was uncool, so I merely suggest that, yes, you may have misunderstood something? I only saw someone concerned that he may have gotten an email in error, and that perhaps someone else may not have gotten this rather important information.
I am sorry if I misunderstand you as well. For instance, I don’t understand, “it was well underhand by Ron K.” So I feel we are not communicating well.
So, let this be clear, that I do not intend an argument, but I though I might clarify something for you. I failed.
Peace, shaca. I share your grief. My condolences to you.

The E-Mail from Ron telling me how to navigate Scott’s TR Threads.
When I saw the Thread here I was concerned that maybe I had got it by mistake that’s all.
Nothing else intended other than to let Ron know that maybe he had made a mistake which is perfectly understandable under the circumstances. Here the worst thing that can happen is that the Family gets the impression that they are being ignored and e-mails that end up at the wrong place can do that.
I just wanted to warn Ron of any Potential Problems before they became something much worse than a possible simple mistake. 😉
Sorry for my poor communication skills but I was more than slightly shocked. And as I was at work I didn’t have access to a direct link to Ron to let him know off TR just in case something had gone wrong.

Not at all Davette.
I need a Front Guy to take the heat away from me and have fingers pointed at them.
So out of a sense of Duty I have suspended all Financial Transactions from the Church of Scum but only after emptying all the accounts into my name. 😀
After you get around with the Other Deacons of the church we can then set about rebuilding the Finances of the church. That Way I stay rich. :^0
As I think I was the first to call Scott The Scummy One when he was using the Pond Scum Alias to give Steffi a hard time I’m withdrawing from any group that may appoint a New God of Scum. They just need to know who’s the real Boss though after they get appointed. 😉
Anyway no more joking as I’ll have more complaints and I really don’t want to distract from the real meaning of this thread.

Thank you, Ron and James, for taking on the burden of letting us all know.
As I look up the TR Spotlight of him and listen to it tonight, I’ll think back on all the great exchanges we had and his contributions.
I remember how excited and honored I was to see him request me as a Friend on FaceBook as he was such a vital member of the TR crew that I appreciated most.
Scott will be greatly missed!– Billy

I can remember when I first joined TR, I always anticipated, and waited and waited for him to post up. He always made me laugh out loud, literally.
I think some of my co-workers though I was nuts (for a while), a couple times (more than I care to admit), when he posted up I fell out of my chair laughing. His humor will truly be missed by me…
May his soul rest in peace… My condolences to his family… I didn’t know him to well, but he will never be forgotten by me.

In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
From Scott’s sister, Catherine.
“If you or anyone else has any pictures or stories that they would like to share with us, please have them pass this information to this e-mail address. We are trying to gather everything we can for his memorial service. Nothing has been finalized as of yet, but we will have more information by Monday evening.Catherine”
So, no place where we can send flowers and whatnot to, yet, but you can plainly see the family’s request.
Good luck with that.
I think that it’s beyond me to write a story telling any one thing about Scott because I know him from a myriad of posts both here and at Facebook. Mostly here but still… I don’t know what to say and I choke up thinking I’ll look stupid or maudlin or something else besides a mature adult because I don’t feel very mature at the moment.
You guys and gals can probably put something together better than I can and I urge you to take the time to do it. Send me a peermail message for Catherine’s email address and go to town with writing. If you can’t I know that I’ll understand.
I’ve sent Scott’s brother email telling him how to navigate Scott’s TR accounts to see the hundreds of posts he has made over the years. I’d sent the link to Scott’s podcast and he was going to play it for the family yesterday.
(long pause)
Please, do the best you can do.
My wife and I are going to send flowers when we get an address, time and location.
I’m outta here.-

In reply to OK peeps. No better time than right now.
You have done so much.
I wouldn’t know where to begin, unless the family wanted some rather dangerous instructions for the wrong way to an administrator account, or some information about his attempt to refinish a built-in cutting board in his apartment.
How little I knew him. But what I know will live on in me, always.

In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
I was away for the weekend, but GG let me know.
Recently I got to know Scott a lot more. He was actually quite deep and thoughtful.. some people would only know his style from TR..a bit of a h*llraiser..not unlike myself.. but he was much much more than that.
I know he cared for his family a lot and he would always tell me of his visits with them, especially a certain one who he absolutly adored.
This is yet another reminder to me, and to us all..live life! Live it as full as you can, for it may be taken at any time.

The Tree Musketeers looked like a real nice community project for kids, but its actually 5 hours away from his Mom’s address. The other site won’t exactly tell you where its planted, just the state that its in.
I like this one out of all that I’ve seen. Its through the Arbor Day Foundation and there’s a registry entry that he helped to reforest the Plumas National Forest in CA. I think Scott would have liked this.

Update. This should end any confusion.
by ron k. · about 14 years, 2 months ago
In reply to The Scummy One – Scott Ross
From Scott’s sister, Catherine:
“We have little to no room for a lot of flowers, so we would prefer, that rather than send flowers, you either send a donation to a favorite charity or to our Mom, whichever you prefer. The donations to Mom are going to help off-set the cost of the memorial arrangements. If choosing a charity, anything involving children, cancer research, or plants are those closest to him (not necessarily in that order). However, if you truly feel the need to send flowers, please send them to the address that Joe gave you. We apologize for the confusion in our requests.”
“Our hearts are going out to everyone who knew and loved him, be it in person or online. This is a tremendously difficult time for everyone, not just his family. Please, please, let everyone know how much our being able to read the TR posts means to the family. I cannot express just how much seeing how everyone felt has touched our hearts. Being able to hear his podcast gave us information about Scott that we never knew, things he never shared with his family, heart-wrenching though it was to hear it. I honestly cannot express this in words any better than this right now.”

My proposal
by jamesrl · about 14 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Update. This should end any confusion.
If you wish to donate directly, please feel free to do so.
If you want to join the “pool” of TR members going in together, please email me. I will be happy to arrange for a card with all of our names, flowers and/or financial donations. I think given the expressed wishes the latter might be better.
Mae also had a great idea, and that is to have something that we can all contribute to, to share our feelings and memories of Scott with his family. Mae suggested a card, but it would have to be huge I think to fit all of us in, so I thought maybe a book we could write in, one page per person or so. I will buy the book, and try to figure out the best routing to send it to every one. The only cost to you would be to send it to the next person. It might take a while to get everyone’s involvement, but I’m ok with that.
If you want to:
a) contribute to flowers from the big gang
b) contribute to a cash gift (tastefully presented with a card)
c) get on the mailling list for the “book of rememberence
or d) all of the above
Please peermail me. If you can’t get the cash or whatever to me on time, don’t worry, I will make a contribution for you.If you want to sign the book, then I will need a full mailling address, and I promise I will keep it in confidence.

Details of the Book
by jamesrl · about 14 years, 2 months ago
In reply to My proposal
So I picked up a book for Scott’s memory book. The format is 8 1/2 by 11 inches. It has clear sleeves to put the content in.
Trish has the great idea of just tell people where to send (to me),instead of the book travelling.
So do your best. It can be text, art, any combination. There is even a pocket for a CD if someone feels inspired.
A favour. I will be making my own artistic contribution, but if someone feels up to the task of doing a title page, I’d be happy to accept.
I won’t post my home address here, but if you want to contribute a page or two, just peer mail me and I will email you my address.

Look for an envelope to go out next week- I want to be certain that everything is completely dry before I mail. I also still have MD stuff yet this week but have my page planned.
If no one is feeling inspired- or even if they are- I would suggest that we compile a CD of Scott music. I know that he was active in FNM. I can send you a recording that I believe to be fitting in MP3 format. As an alternative, people would be welcome to send stuff to me and I would be happy to burn the disc. Whatever you would like- just tell me.
My contribution would be Bob Seeger’s “Against the Wind”.

Rereading my post, I see I used “He” instead of it (for the book). My mistake. I guess I’m just a tad distracted. I’ve corrected it.
Next time you want to score points by pointing out my grammar or typos, just peer mail me.
Or better still, resist the urge to be a smart ass. You let one word, two letters distract you from the intent and content of a long post meant to help organize something. Just what purpose did that serve?
Do you want to do this in my stead? I’d be happy to send you what I have and you can make the effort. Or would that take away from your cranky old man time.

If you want to contribute to the family, I’d be happy to put together a card, but everyone’s name on it and lump the money together.
I have Paypal. You can use my email address to send to my paypal account (I’ve only used it before to send funds, but the website says I can receive too). I’d like to get the funds together by early next week. If you don’t want to do paypal, let me know what you want to contribute by peermail, and I will float the money for now, and wait for your check, whatever.
You can of course directly contribute to any charity in Scott’s name and get a tax receipt.

I personally find that one of the most heinous distasteful things I’ve ever seen posted anywhere ever.
Whose sodding taxes are offset when some poor bastard has just died?
That’s not a contribution – that’s a transaction.

All I was doing was offering an alternative. Donating to the family would not get you a tax receipt, and thats what I was trying to set up. But some people preferred to donate to a charity instead, which is their right and their choice. If they donate to a chairty, they will get a reciept yes, and that often entices people to donate more.
All I ever offered to do here was do whatever the consensus was, all I wanted to do was help.
Conduct your own affairs as you see fit, I never suggested anything else, and I offered to collect to make things easier for those who wished to contribute to the family.

I see and laud you for what you do; or, were doing.
Count as a good thing that you run up against the fractious and contentious lot of us.
We are that until we run up against our common denominator of death. Whereupon, we go our fractious and contentious ways.
You, included.

If it hadn’t been me posting my disgust, it would’ve been one of the other three peers who have since emailed me. It was just that I got there first.
I DID NOT suggest that you curtail your endeavours.
I simply voiced (perhaps over-vociferously, but still in character!) my opinion that I found the concept of a tax receipt distasteful.
That’s all.
No accusations were made and none should be drawn.

I appreciate that you were willing to try to pull something together from the community. Your effort means a ton to me.

I’ll not try to recount the past, attempt to describe the emotional impact with words that are unequal to the task, or offer any of the trite cliches that frequently serve as poor servants of ones thoughts in times such as these, but simply be in quiet communion with those whose lives were touched by his presence, and are now touched by his absence.
May the Future Be Kind.

I meant no wrong
O’erM meant no wrong
Santee(I never understand anything he says anyway) meant no wrong. We just really, really loved Scummy. He was TR for many folks, me included.
I think we are all just crushed.
He just went away, and none of us got to say goodbye. We are danm mad that we couldn’t, and would probably just about do anything we could to change that.
I for one am trusting James to do the community of “us” his best to help us get the word to Scott’s family just how much he was to us all.As they say james. ” The checks in the mail” and I have full faith in you that you will make all of us very proud to be a part of the TR family.

In reply to Alright.
reading these last few posts..and wondering what the h*ll is going on?
The death of someone we thought of as a friend should bring everyone closer, not divide?
My mother taught me a skill which at times like this, I cherish.. a little saying called “time and place”.
Sometimes, we can think things in our head, but due to circumstances or audience, it is not appropriate to voice the thought.I for one appreciate 100% what James was trying to do. Its not an easy job to organise things like these, doubly so when participants are scattered to the 4 corners of the world.
Thank you for your efforts James, I know first hand the lengths you will go to for a friend, and how you are glad to help out when needed. You are truly a man above reproach and I take exception to anything that may indicate you are not.

is an unpredictable thing. We all feel it at multiple points in our lives, yet we each respond somewhat differently. I think it’s one of the more difficult emotions. (As though they’re not all difficult…)

way too often you never hear about on-line or forum people who pass on, you just start to notice they haven’t posted for a while and then are left forever wondering what happened to them.
It’s sad to see someone pass on when so young, under any circumstances.

I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to say about my friend. I find that I just can’t. It is as if putting those thoughts down into anything more concrete would take him away from me.
About all I can say is that we all grieve in our own ways. The SO and I have been shattered by this.
Let go when YOU can. Be okay with that.
