Tiny files clogging up my Windows Folder

By mpd881 ·
I have three machines that, for some reason, create thousands of tiny files in my Windows folder. I am running Win98 SE. They apparently aren't all created at the same time. One computer has an 18+ GB HD. Besides about 4 GB for system files/programs, the rest was filled with this gibberish. The files range in size from about 169 KB to 3.13 MB. The file names are Bccockbi, Bccocngb etc. No one I know has any idea what they are. It fills the HD and crashes the computer every 4-5 months orso. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check for any viruses, worms, and spyware?
AdAware (by Lavasoft) is free and can find hidden spyware programs.

I have Norton CE installed on the server this computer is attached to. No viruses detected. I installed AdAware anyway and all it found was a few cookies.

Get a Norton's Utilities 2002 Pro disk and boot it from CD, run the anti-virus. Once you find the culprit using the anti-virus program (sounds a lot like a box @ the school I recently removed W32.Magistr.24876@mm from), then go to the Symantec site and secure any removal tool that is suggested and use it.

Good Luck.

I've got 2 questions for you.
1) are you using a DOS groupware product called enable?
2) Is you email system ccmail?
Something to try, set the DOS environment variable TEMP=c:\windows\temp and make sure that directory structure exists.
You set the TEMP environment variable by having the following line in you autoexec.bat:
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
Let me know if that helps redirect. Another one to set is:
SET TMP=C:\windows\temp
Good luck

Your situation sounds simlilar to what happens with Microsoft's Machine Debug Manager installed, although that program leaves behind files that start with "fff" and end in ".tmp". My guess is that you have a program(not "technically" a virus, though sometimes it sure seems that way) that is leaving these files behind. So I would be looking for any programs that are common to all 3 machines, and which were installed prior to the problem arising. If one or more programs fits the bill, check the vendor's web site.

Good Luck :-)
