Toshiba Laptop display scrambled

By berwyntech ·
Hi!
I have a Toshiba Pentium laptop that for some reason has flipped out.
The screen shows nothing but scrambled characters... a lot of exclamation points and other junk, while booting.
Then in windows, you can't read the screen.
It seems to work fine, just the display.

This sometimes happens. Check for viruses. Also in windows check the contrast and brightness.

As a last resort Reinstall windows to freshen up, but do check for viruses before you embark on such a treacherous task (i personally hate windows installations.)

Regards,

Nicholas.

Reset the power of the unit. Most Toshiba laptops have a reset button on the side or at the back of the unit. It's a small hole. Use a tip of a paper clip to poke it. You could also remove all the batteries. Pause for a few seconds and replace them.

That should do it. Enjoy!

Does it show OK while it is running the Power on test? Can you get into DOS mode OK?

If so, it sounds like the resolution might be mis-set. Can you boot into safe mode? If so, go to display properties and reset the display resolution to something lower.

If not, you may have a a hardware problem in the laptop's screen.

I've had this same problem here's two things to look at:
1. re-install display drivers, I would recommend getting new/current off the Toshiba web site.
2. I have found this to be the usual cause with display problems of this type. there isa cable between the mother board and display due to poor design on some notebooks they tend to get bent/crimped and need to be replaced this will cause the display to flip out. Gateway solo 2300 had this problem big time.
one way to check if it's a hardware or driver problem is get a dos boot disk or create a boot disk (format a: /s) boot you system using the boot disk if your display looks ok it's most likly a driver problem if your display is still flaky it may be a hardware problemJC Miller
