While I was away this last week or so, my e-mail address book

got riffled, and all its extant contacts were spammed a malicious link from *me*. The only thing I did that could’ve caused it was logging onto the *free* wi-fi at a Days Inn last week. Now that I’ve ‘run off by myself’ in an RV w/car hauler, I’m going to think twice about using unsecured networks (such as hotels’, truckstops’, and the like), and fire up my new little 3G hotspot instead.

seems we read of problems on “public free WiFi hotspots” quite often.
Best advice I’ve read is #1, only use SSL sites (those with HTTPS in the
URL), #2 keep your system patched, your antivirus/antispyware updated,
and your firewall on, #3 turn off file/printer sharing, #4 only use web based
SSL enabled email, or turn on SSL in your email client (if available) and
#5, maybe most important, consider using a VPN to handle the connection.

The worst part of what happened to you (so far as you know, anyway) is
maybe a bit of embarrassment due to the email messages sent. However,
if you entered any authentication credentials at non-SSL web sites, those
username/password combinations could be compromised. Might want to
        change your passwords.
I haven’t had an opportunity to use free WiFi, but, I have used my old
Blackjack as a 3g modem! That’s one of the reasons I resist the “upgrade”
        offers, hehe!
Good luck, hope your trip is a good one! 🙂
