Tracking Loaner Inventory

By amaclaughlin ·
I am looking for a user-friendly and reliable tool/method to track loaner hardware inventory such as laptops, pdas, etc.

Obstacles that we are running up against right now include:
* poor communication between the team that tracks the inventory availability and the team that needs to provide this information to the user community
* adequate forecasting of availability for advanced requests. -- Some people call two weeks in adavance and some two days. The people who call in two weeks should get priority however for the hardware, however, we do not want to deny others access equipment in the meantime.

I am interested to hear what others currently use and the effectiveness of their systems. Thank you.

Loaner Inventory Tracking

Amaclaughlin, your not alone. Apparently a lot of people have run into this issue. We are also searching so while I cannot offer a solution I can give you some insight into what we have and have used and where we've found it lacking.

First we currently use Spiceworks for Inventory and Helpdesk Logging. Its free and much more user friendly than anything we've used in the past so kudos to them. On the downside there is no library feature which is what we need to track loaner equipment with.

In the past we've used Track-IT. This software which was owned by Blue Ocean but now by Numara has a good library function however its ability to inventory and track history on the library is lacking. If the library was able to maintain historical information on the items even if we had to enter everything manually like creating an access database it would still be functional but unfortunately that was not the case with our version 5. I have not checked on newer versions however the software is costly and not moduled in a way as to allow you to purchase only the library module.

Hopefully this information help. If you happen to find a good solution please let me know.

Good Luck
Mike

I agree about the Library in Trackit

I'm looking into the bar coding in Track-It 8.5 - does anyone else out there use Track-It that would like to talk! I'd love some interaction about the software.
