translate english to japanese (kanji)

By Veecky ·
Hi ALL,

First of all i will explain what is the problem :

I am using a DOS based (running in windows mode) software called DATAFLEX 3.1 by Data Access world wide. now when sending letters to our customers
(some from japan) i want to be able to print some lines in japanese character set. I am using a kyocera 3750 printer.

considering the above i think the following will solve my problem.

I am looking for a program (pref 'C') that can take a input string in english and translate into japanese and output it into a .txt file.

or else even if there are any print commands that i can use (Esc sequence) it will be of great help.

Thnx guys,

veecky

Wow, hard one. Alright, first of all your OS should be able to read text in other languages, I bet you do have already, and this can be printed, second you cannot, I repeat you cannot translate english into japanese by just clicking a button. You must have a software that translate eng-jap and jap-eng languages. Good news and bad news, the good news, the sofware is available, just type in eng then click enter and ..voila.. jap.. bad news is , it is not usually perfect japanese translation, sometimes japanese laugh at the wrong translations.

Dealing with Asian languages (DoubleByte Character Systems)in programming for Windows OS is challenging enough, in DOS it's a nightmare. Besides,I don't think your printer directly supports printing Kanji characters from DOS.There are printers that handle printing kanji using esc sequences but first you have to know which kanji you need.
I suggest you consider handling Japanese translation and printing separately from Dataflex. There are many FREE resources to help you do this. Go to http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html for initial info on setting up your system to display and print Kanji. This site has a wealth of info and free tools. For shareware software to display and print Kanji (and translate individual words), try www.coolest.com/jquicktrans or ftp://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/kanjidic_doc.html.
For simple English to Japanese and J>E translation, try babelfish.altavista.com. If you're still set on doing this in DOS, let me know and I'll dig my files out of the attic.
