Trouble sharing local printer Win2000

By wlewis ·
I have a HP612C attached to an NT4 workstation. It is shared with other lan users in this office using NT4. Problem is that the Windows2000 machine will not use the driver from the NT4 box (not compatible).
Attempting to ad network printer gets error HPFecp20.sys can't be found in WINNT\SYSTEM32. WIN2000 machine will add the 612C as a local printer fine but not the share? What's up with that?

Trouble sharing local printer Win2000

I've seen something similar to this before, and the only solution I found was a work-around.

If the printer is installed on the NT4 box and functioning properly (and shared), install the appropriate driver for Win2k on the Win2k box as if it wereconnected locally (install the printer using the lpt port without actually having the printer connected). Once the driver has installed, go to the printer properties, Ports tab, and add a new port. Add a "Standard TCP/IP Port", and point it to "\\sharedpc\sharedprintername", give the port a name, and then point the new printer to this port and see if you can print.

Hope this helps.

Windows 2000 INCLUDES the driver for your printer. You shouldn't need to download or use any diskettes to install it.

Good luck!

Win2000 will not work with NT 4.0 drivers for that printer. You will have to go to the website for that printer driver and get the 2000 driver for that printer and install it on the 2000 when you are adding that printer.
