Try to replacing Internet explorer
Lockedby nlane126 · about 19 years, 10 months ago
I have a blank screen when the computer boot up it says internet explorer crashed. The program performed an illegal operation and will shut down.
Explorer caused an invalid page fault and in module at : 0l5f: 00401f31 and safe mode screen is still blank . So my question is there away to remove explore and reinstall it either from safe mode prompt or command prompt. My next step is to go by another hard drive and the change the okld drive to slave and remove file from it that way, but wondering if I can’t get it to boot up will I be able to remove file from it? thanksTopic is locked -

Microsoft has succeeded in confusing you.
Explorer and Internet Explorer are NOT the same thing!
Explorer IS your Windows session.
Further, Internet Explorer is woven into the Windows code. There are no files to remove to correct your problem.
Since you posted this in the W95/98 section, I assume that you are running Windows 95 or 98.
If so, the first thing to try is to re-install Windows over the top of itself.
Boot from a Windows startup floppy, or your Windows CD.
Run setup and install Windows.
Make sure that you install Windows directly over itself.
Use the C:\Windows folder as the target.Once you have Windows up and running, I recommend that you back up your files and start over again fresh.
Start by downloading and running Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com
Click on free download.
Print out the web page that is created and you will have a list of software and hardware on your system.Download the latest drivers for your hardware, and burn them onto a CD.
After backing up your files, and creating your system profile, boot from a startup floppy and format your hard drive.
format C: /u
After the format is complete, insert your Windows CD and run setup.
Short of a format and re-installation of Windows, you can get some relief from system repair utilities.
Start with either AdAware or SpyBot
http://www.lavasoft.de
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsdRemove any spaces from the pasted links.
Then, you need a registry cleaner utility such as System Suite from http://www.v-com.com
Or Norton Win Doctor.
Then, for Windows 98, follow up with System File Checker.

Explorer.exe caused an invalid page fault in explorer.exe at 0157F: 00401F31
CAUSE
This issue may occur when you install an earlier version of Internet Explorer than the currently-installed version, or when the new installation of Internet Explorer is corrupt.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, extract new copies of the original Windows files from your Windows CD. To do this, follow these steps:
Start the computer with CD-ROM support using a Windows 98 Startup Disk.
Insert your Windows Compact Disk (CD) into the CD or DVD-ROM drive.
Type drive: where drive is the drive letter of the CD or DVD-ROM drive, and then press ENTER. For example, D:.NOTE: If you have an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) installation of Windows, your Windows installation files may be located on the hard disk in the following location:
C:\Windows\Options\CabsType cd\win98, and then press ENTER.
Type the following command and then press ENTER:
extract /a /y /e /l c:\windows\system base4.cab Shdocvw.dll Mshtml.dll Comctl32.dll Shlwapi.dll Shell32.dllType the following command and then press ENTER:
extract /a /y /e /l c:\windows base4.cab explorer.exeRestart the computer.
NOTE: If you cannot access Control Panel or Windows Explorer, use this procedure to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and extract the following files from the Windows 98 CD to the Windows\System folder:
Inetcpl.cpl
Ole2.dll
Ole32.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Olepro32.dll
Olethk32.dll
Setupwbv.dll

Chas is right in saying that this is NOT an Internet Explorer problem but Windows Explorer itself.
You can try a simple system file check in Safe mode to see if it restores dead files.
While booting, keep pressing the F8 key to enter the startup screen. YOu will see an option to run in Safe Mode, select safe mode.
Once booted into safe mode, place your Windows 95/98 CD in the drive, click START>RUN and type SFC.EXE into the box then press enter.
This will open the system file checker and allow you to scan the system for currupted, altered and mising system files needed to run Explorer.
If it finds anything missing or corrupted it will restore the file from the disk.
If you DON’T have a disk, you can run it anyway and simply write down the missing files it finds, MOST Windows files can be found online with a simple search for the file name.

sorry about that, my mistake.
From what I understand (which can be quite little at times)you can’t run SFC from DOS, I wondered why nobody had mentioned it!
You should rerun setup, over top of your current install as Chas reccommends.
You will need a Windows Startup disk (borrow one from a friend if you don’t have one or computer stores will generally let you make a boot floppy for free).
Boot with the floppy in the A drive and the Windows CD in the CDROM, select ‘Boot with CDROM support’ from the DOS menu, after some Windows files load you will see TYPE HELP TO GET HELP followed by an A: prompt. Type E:\SETUP (if ‘D’ WAS your CRDOM drive, the letter is temporarily shifted ahead, D becomes E etc.)
This will run Windows setup and replace the system files without erasing any data on the disk.
