Un-install IE6

By HereInOz ·
I have a Win2000 box that recently has begun generating an error almost every time we use Internet Explorer 6. It is an IE error in the HTML dll file. I am almost at the point of formatting the drive and re-installing from scratch, but I feel there is a registry key that can be changed that will allow a re-install of IE6.

If I can do that, and it still faults, then it is Format C: If that is done and it still faults, then we have a hardware problem I guess. I have done the usual stuff ofchanging memory sticks, repairing Internet Explorer, and restoring the BIOS to base settings but to no avail. The re-install option is my last shot before I format the drive.

Can anyone remember how it is done?

Un-install IE6

Here are some links that may help.
The best option may be one of the IE Eradicator programs.

http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

At the site, they say that IE Eradicator DOES NOT work for W2K SP2 or higher though.

Thanks Chas. Have the win2k at SP3, so IE Eradicator didn't do the deed. I did, however, uninstall IE SP1, and that seems to have solved the problem. Many thanks

You will not be able to Remove IE6 unless you use the Add/Remove Programs and restore to a previous version of IE,select IE from the open window, then click on Remove, select option to restore to previous from the popup window.
The utility IE Radicator is not supported in W2K

Thanks soulrider. As I stated above, uninstalled IE SP1 and that has made a big difference. This is a fairly old machine (Cyrix 233 on an AT board) and I have noticed that NAV2002, once updated to the latest version, caused unpaged memory errors as well. Going back to NAV2001 cured that one. Perhaps I am asking too much of the old hardware.

Thanks for the input.

Un-install IE6

Please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Q293907.

It explains that reinstalling Windows 2K on top of the current one restores the version of Internet Explorer that was included with Windows 2000. I tried myself and it worked. To reinstall Windows, enter setup, hit F8 for MS License Agreement, and R for repair.

Once you get your ogignal IE (mine was IE5.0), then you may upgrade to IE5.5 or try IE6.0 again.

Thanks for the input. Fortunately I don't think I will have to go quite that far, as you can see from my comments above, but you never know these things have gone until some time has passed. It is good to keep in the memory cells for a later time, on another machine. Thanks again.
