Unable to Change Computer Name Joined to a Domain

By danielt17 ·
Hey Guys,

I'm trying to rename my local computer that is joined to a 2003 R2 domain. I get the following error

"Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again."

or i get this error

"The following error occurred attempting to change the computer name to "OFFICE-IT": (the domain "SERVER" was joined under the old computer name "TEMPLE-IT")

I tried logging on locally and
not to the domain and I still get the same error.

Similar Issue with 2000 in NT 4.0 Domain

by danielt17 In reply to Unable to Change Computer ...

I know there is a issue with 2000 workstations in a NT 4.0 domain. The workaround was to remove the workstation from the domain, reboot and change the name of the computer and add it to the domain again. Dunno if this works with 2003 R2. (One would think that this issue has been resolved since NT 4.0)

Disjoin, cancel reboot, rename, reboot, join (depending on the rules, you may need to add the name to AD before joining again).

Retrieve the netdom utility off of the Server 2003 CD and run this script:

path_to_netdom\netdom renamecomputer TEMPLE-IT /newname:OFFICE-IT /userd:domain_name\administrator /passwordd:* /usero:administrator /passwordo:*

Active Directory

by cypher.msix In reply to Unable to Change Computer ...

Check Active Directory Users & Computers to see if that computer name isn't already in use. If it's there and no other machine is using it, delete it.

Then, logon to the machine as local admin, rename with the Network ID wizard, and wala. New PC name. :-)

Disconect then reconect

by ken In reply to Unable to Change Computer ...

I am fairly sure that you have to join a workgroup (in order to leave the domain). Reboot. Rename the comuputer. Reboot then join the domain with the new name,
