    Unable to download large file

    Locked

    by lizzy ·

    Hi all,
I have been trying to download a 230MB EXE file from an FTP server for a while now. I keep getting an error message:

Internet Explorer cannot download FILE.EXE from http://ftp.servername.com. The connection with the server was reset.

Sometimes I will have only a few MB downloaded and sometimes about 100MB. I have shut off the browser service on my W2K workstation. I have IE6.0.2, 128MB RAM, plenty of free space on the drive and a high speed connection via my LAN. The Domain admin says there are no restrictions on downloads and I am the local admin for my building and my workstation.

What causes this and how do I get this file that I need for work without having to pay for a CD (we’re government on a tight budget)?

    Thanks in advance!

Often this problem occurs with firewalls in place on the client, as the server takes some time to gather what you need, then processes it. In the meantime, the firewall and the server lose the connection, as the firewall sees a connection not being used and closes it.

If you are behind a firewall, try going around it or turning it off.

        Hi nikki,
Thanks for the input, but there is no firewall on my client PC. I must pass through our LAN firewall as always, but this has never been a problem before. I do not have access or rights to the LAN firewall and its settings.

I was thinking perhaps it had something to do with my newer workstation\OS or the sheer size of the EXE file. Most other software updates and programs from the same site have been 20-50MB.

        Any other ideas?

      It *could* be the size.

I have a download manager for things that large, but I’m on dial-up.
Have you considered using one of those? You’d still get disconnected, but at least you wouldn’t have to start over every time.
You can find several nice free ones by searching Google.

        Hi nikki,
I was able to find and install a free manager. I was able to get the entire 230MB file on the first attempt! I uninstalled it once I was finished and found that it removed itself completely although it did send me out to the internet toask me why I was removing it–we have software standards and really aren’t supposed to have unauthorized stuff on the workstations… This was the right price as well since we have no budget for extras–free!! Many thanks!

      Hi,

I get the error myself sometimes.

I suspect that the connection reset is occurring along the route between you and the FTP server.

Some sites reset connections when they reach their connection limit.

I think you are going to have to install a download manager.
Among other things, these programs allow you to resume an interrupted download.

I do not recall ever getting the error on a download using Mozilla. It has a download manager integrated into the browser.

      Chas

        Hi Chas,
nikki’s answer helped me, I just didn’t get back to this until today. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I cannot install and use Mozilla here, though, so that wasn’t an option for me.

Yes, using IE to FTP files really doesn’t work very well.
For this problem, I suggest you use a good FTP client like CuteFTP. It will reconnect with the FTP site and resume the FTP download.
I pulled down a copy of Mandrake 9.0 recently, and theonly way I could get all 500+ Megs of it was to use CuteFTP.

      http://www.cuteftp.com

      hope this helps

        Hi Joseph,
Thank you also for taking the time to answer. I did check out the cuteftp site just for kicks today, and it isn’t free which also wasn’t an option for me and my paltry budget of $0!
