Unable to login

hi,
my system, linux red hat ver 9,
is not accepting logins in graphic interface. it says, authentication failed!! ( for all logins, root and all others)

But, when i boot into 'emergency' mode where it ask for root password, it authenticates and i'm logged in text mode!

I don't know whatz the problem and how to solve it.

Try hitting CTRL+ALT+F4 when you login graphically. That should switch you over to a text login but not in emergency mode. Can you login then?

i suggest to use command line interface to create users :-command useradd,passwd ...then try to login....

try to login by changing the password of any user by text mode in single user mode.

Have you checked your PAM configuration ?
If not, maybe you wan?t to look at the files residing in /etc/pam.d. If theres no file for the service you?re trying to autheticate with
"other" is used. The default in the "other" file is often the module "pam_deny".

Btw. Are there any Messages in syslog?

If you try to login with the root user in X/xdm: This is denied in many configurations!!

Btw. Are there any Messages in syslog?
