Unable to open Excel file

By choy.waigiat ·
When I open an Excel file from a Floppy disk, an error says "MyDocument.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding".

Anyone can help?

thanks and regards,

Hi

Was wondering if your Excel file is encrypted?
If its encrpyted by the source of the file or wherever you got the file then you will experience this problem. i experience this before as my excel file was encrypted and i got the same error.if not, try to
1)rename you Excel file
2)don't open from floppy directly copy to harddisk
3)ensure the disk is not write protected.
4)try it on another machine.

all the best..

Check out the microsoft article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q182671 (remove any spaces that may have snuck in the URL)

This work around they outlined helped me....

Copy your Microsoft Excel workbook from your network server to your local hard disk.
Edit the local copy of the workbook.
Copy the workbook from your local hard disk back to the network server.

Good luck!

If you can copy this file to you hard drive, do it. Right click the copied file and select property, in the dialog box untick all attributes particularly the read-only attribute. Open this file in Excel, do work then save it again. This should work.

Whenever you canot read a file on a floppy disk, the file is probably corrupt or the disk is defective. Occasionally you can read the file from a 2nd computer, or by opening via Word, but more commonly, the file is unreadable. You can try to repair the disk with scandisk (Windows 95/98/ME) or chkdsk (Win NT/2000/XP) but this only rarely works.
