Unable to open Excel files directly by clicking on the file icon

By Clifford Francis ·
HI,
My OS is Vista.
Previously I had Office 2007.
I was unable to open Excel 2003 files by directly clicking on the file Icon. I had to open Excel 2007 and from the open tab, browse and open Excel 2003 files.
I then uninstalled Office 2007 and reinstalled Office 2003.
But still I am unable to open Excel 2003 files by directly clicking on the file Icon.
Its very frustrating.
Can you tell me what could be the problem

Do you get an error message?

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Unable to open Excel file ...

If so, what is the error?

Are these files located on a network or shared folder somewhere?

What does the icon look like? Do these file names end with .XLS?

If your icons are left over

by tintoman In reply to Unable to open Excel file ...

From your Office 2007 installation then you wont be able to open your documents from them.
You will need to right click on one of them, select "open with" and then "choose a programme", then browse to your excel programme withnin the Microsoft office folder in pregramme files.
Make sure you tick the box which says "Always use this programme to open this type of file"

You're going to get us LOST and you'll end up receiving no help at all. Please stick to ONE place, like this one, and post here.

Now, as to your problem. In one of the threads, you said BOTH 2003 and 2007 are installed on your system and that the icon looks like the 2003 icon.

If you have BOTH 2003 and 2007 on your system, you need to uninstall 2007 first, then uninstall 2003. Reboot and install JUST the Office 2007.

It is possible to have both installed on your system if you've followed Microsoft's directions on how to do it. However, they recommend you don't run both on the same system because problems just like this exist.

Check the Options in the Excel

by supertab In reply to Unable to open Excel file ...

I have faced this before and have found below solution:

1) Open microsoft Excel (any version), then go to options -> advance (in Excel 2010)
2) Find a checkbox saying: "Ignore Other Application" or "Ignore Other Application that use DDE" (in Excel 2010). Make sure you unchecked it. If you cant find it under the advanced tab, just search around, it should be somewhere in the options, depending on which version of Excel you have. Save it.
3) Try to directly open document by double clicking it. Should be fine now.

yes , maybe some excel files full of unverified-apps, so the excel program can not recognize them, so it can not be opened.
