Unable to Resolve Name to MS Exch Srvr.

By cjpekich ·
Windows 2000 on a Compaq Armada M700 Laptop with MS Outlook 98. When trying to set up the user for an Exchange account from the control panel "Mail" or the Outlook 98 setup, am getting an error message after entering the MS Exchange Server name and the user name. "The name could not be resolved. The Microsoft Exchange Address Book was unable to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. Contact your system administrator if the problem persists." When clicking OK, another message comes up. "The name could not be resolved. The action could not be completed." I was able to PING the server by name and by IP address. I have read other "fixes" of installing both the OS and the Outlook by CD, but this hasn't helped. Also to change the binding order for RPC. This hasn't helped. Works on same user's desktop PC. Any other suggestions?

Use the "Check Names" button in Outlook when setting this user up and make sure you are inputting the name in the proper format (which may vary according to the server policies):

Lastname, first ?

If you can ping the exchange server it should be able to resolve accounts.... but there may be a communication problem (at least from the error message). Is the exchange server local to you?

You might want to try setting up your account on this computer, just to temporarily see if you canreally contact Exchange with your own account (this would prove that the exchange server is fine, and your account is fine). If this works, then there's something wrong with the name or user account. If it doesn't work, then you need to resolve the server communication issue.

Or the local computer communication issue with the server.... but probably the server since you seem to be able to ping to it from this computer?

Was entering name correctly. Was using "check names" button. Was not able to use any user Exchange account name known to work on other machines with the same configuration. Was able to ping server on same machine.

After installation of MS Office, install the latest Service Pack (SP3) for Windows 2000. If you have installed the SP3 for W2k prior to MS Office, run the SP3 for W2k again. That should do the trick as a workaround for your problem. Good Luck.

Also, try to resolve the name of the account/mailbox using the MS Exchange Server IP Address.

Ended up blasting the laptop and rebuilding. Works fine now. Doctor needed it by today and didn't have time to try other things. Your fix may have worked. Thanks.
