Unable to restore Documents & Settings from external hard drive

brian
HP 6715b running WinXP Pro had severe problems but I managed to save Docs & Settings to an external drive before system crashed entirely. Have had to reload WinXP Pro on to computer because recovery could not resolve problem, but I am unable to restore Docs & Settings from external drive. I suspect I need to change registry settings. Has anyone got a positive solution?

Did you use the files and settings transfer built-in for XP, or used a 3rd party program? if you didn't use any of those then it won't work if you picked up the documents and settings folder. only the files you would be able to restore not the settings. Maybe someone out there knows about a registry entry. Hope to help

First, copy the existing D&S Default User profile to a holding area. Delete any new user profiles that you want to replace with the original ones.

Locate the first user profile in your original D&S and copy it to the desktop. Rename it as 'Default User' and set the properties to Hidden. Copy it to D&S and overwrite the existing DU profile. Log on as that user and the default profile (currently the user's original) will be copied to the user's new profile.

Repeat for each of the original profiles you want to recreate. When you're finished, copy the default DU profile you made at the very beginning back into the D&S folder.
