Unable to send emails in OE6

By harposdad ·
Running XP Home. Have had the following problem on clients PC for some time.
The client can receive emails but gets an error message about being unable to contact the smtp server.
I have reloaded OE numerous times (checking settings each time). Her ISP says that the server is not down and her settings are correct.
Any Ideas???

Hello,

The ISP is likely providing a POP3 server for incoming mail and an SMTP server for outgoing mail. They are separate so it is possible for one to work and the other to fail.

To prove you can connect to the SMTP server, you can use Windows TELNET client like this:

telnet domain.com 25

Substitute the correct domain name or IP address for the SMTP server for "domain.com". The "25" after the "domain.com" specifies the IP port used by SMTP.

If you can connect to the SMTP port on the server, you should get a message back like this:

220 domain.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.10/8.11.0; Thu, 31 Mar 2005 02:04:29 -0500

Enter "quit" (without the quotes) and press ENTER to exit.

If you don't get the response, the SMTP server is not responding. Provide this information to the ISP.

If the above works, then double check the following settings in OE6 for the "account" in question:

1. Outgoing mail (SMTP).
2. Account name.
3. Password.
4. Log on using Secure Password Authentication (checked or unchecked as appropriate...if in doubt, UNcheck it).
5. Outgoing Mail Server: My server requires authentication (checked or unchecked as appropriate...if in doubt, UNcheck it).

Also: If you have a firewall, turn it off and see if things improve.

Did this help?

In OE tools, accounts, mail, properties, servers; if the My server requires authentication box is checked, click settings and verify that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button is selected. If the My server requires authentication is not checked, select it and test your mail.

Hope this helps,
Dan
