Unable to turn 5166 Compaq desk pro on

By Pogge ·
We are using a 5166 Compaq Deskpro (Wind 95) The start up diskette and it will not recognize the A drive at all. When I turn on the computer the keyboard lights briefly, the CD rom drive lights up for a second then nothing. No sounds, no picture, could it be the video card, Any idea what the problem could be?

Is it under warranty? If so, send it back to base. It sounds like a mboard problem

If it were a graphics card problem, your PC would emit a series of beeps. it will either be a memory problem or a system board failiure, if possible, swap out the memory first with some known working memory, its so cheap at the momnt, you could even buy some if no-one can lend you any. If it still does not work, it is likely to be the system board. As answer above says, send it back if it is under warranty, if not, get yourself a new sys board.

Check your data cables. Unhook everything you can and make sure any data cables are seated correctly (all pins - don't miss two) and seated well. Make sure the red wire goes to power on the hard drive (if you keep it connected) and is correct for the floppy (you can turn it over and try it both ways). Some data cables not connected correctly cause some kind of "short" and the system will not come up at all. Good luck!
