Unable to write certain file names

By vjcc ·
My computer refuses to accept to the C: drive any file with the prefix "cdrom.*". This is preventing me using my Widows XP Installation because it halts at "cannot write Cdrom.inf" and "Cdrom.sys". I have another computer bought from the same dealer with the same problem. A third machine has no problem. What gives???

Unable to write certain file names

If I understand your question correctly, it appears that you are attempting to save a file with a file name containing an asterisk (*). Since an asterisk is a file name wildcard, it cannot be used within the name a file. In general, I would recommend that you use only alphabetical & numerical characters and the dash (-) or underline (_).

If this doesn't help, please clarify the question a little, and someone will give you some insight.

O.J.

This could be a problem with the Bios. Check to see if they're the same on all machines.

I'd say make sure that if there's a prior operating system on the HDD, it's not got the same files. It could be a problem with those files being read-only.

I have fixed the problem. In Config.sys, one line contained the word "cdrom". When this is changed to anything else, e.g. "mycdrom", I have no problems. Thanks to those who provided answers.
