Undefined Multi Media device

By gfaze ·
Hello all
After installing win98 on a
PII 266Mhz 128Mb Win98 SP 1
Device Manager shows yellow !
over multi media device and
ms diag show it as problem
device (undfined or unknown
driver not loaded). I then
realized that I did not have the
speakers hooked to the card
during setup. Anyone know if
this could have caused setup
to ignore the card.
Thanks

Gary, The speakers not connected wouldnt matter. My first thing would be to remove the device in Device Manager and then verify it is gone in Safe Mode and reboot. Also, you may want to get the most current drivers, as well as, reseating the board. Good LucK

NO! Not having speakers attached to the system will NOT affect the install of windows. As long as the card was in there, windows will recognize it but most likely, unless an old card, will not install it. You must manually put in drivers. If its installed and undefined like you say, go into safe mode and remove drivers for it. There might be a "ghost" driver. Then go and reinstall drivers. Most likely though, this is caused to the abnormal setup you had to do stated in your last question.

OK, this is what you do. FIRST OF ALL MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE DRIVER DISK OR CD FOR YOUR SOUND CARD. If not, go on the net and get the right driver. Sometimes with sound cards, win 98 will detect the wrong card or use the wrong driver during install, hence a yellow marker in the device manager. These are the steps you take.

1) locate right driver
2) goto device manager and remove all devices with a yellow or red marker
3) (still in the device manager) hit refreash ***
4) windows will say found new hardware
5) search for new driver
6) point it to your disk or cd
7) after reboot the device will work

***
sometimes hitting refreash will not work. Sometimes you have to reboot, some times you have to go to "add and remove hardware" but most of the time if hitting refreash in the device manager does not cause windows to see a new plug and play device, maybe the card is not seated properly.
