Unexpected Terminations of Applications

By Pooki_24 ·
I recently upgraded an old HP Pavilion computer to Windows XP. It boots up fine and everything but when I try to open the McAfee Console or AOL Instant Messanger, the programs will open for a few seconds and then disappear. IE and Office opens up just fine and won't terminate until told to but certain programs will. It sounds like a virus at work but I couldn't find any hits on what virus it could be. If anyone has any information, please help.

Search on the Internet for CWShredder, it is a program to remove Cool Web Search spyware. It will sometimes cause the symptoms that your describing. It will usually shut down any application that might allow you to detect or remove it.

Hope it helps, also you may want to do an online virus scan from either Symantec or McAfee web site.

You probably do need CW shredder as mentioned above, it may also be a number of other hijacks.

Here is a link for a free online scan that will perform a trojan scan.
http://www.trojanscan.com/

If not use this link to download CW shredder, if the scan comes up with nothing (Not included with most trojan detection tools yet).

(scroll 3/4 down the page to 'removal instructions'

Good luck,

try to do a online scan for virusses at
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
(there is a link check for security risks).

also open the registry (start, run, regedit)
and look up for hkeylocalmachine, software, microsoft, windows, current version , run.
and check if you have notting suspicious at startup.

you can also find it at administrative tools, computer management, system information, software environment.

when done, reinstall the applications with their latests versions.

Try using Hijack this. http://tinyurl.com/uuen

Go through the results VERY carefully, if you do not remove all entries of a hijack, it will run on boot again.

Thanks for all your input. I ended up reinstalling the Operating System, which did the trick. The computer is working fine now.
