Unknown password for Sun box Help!!!

By DV8Angel ·
Hello,
My team just adopted a Unix box but the team that turned it over to us didn't know what the passwords were anymore. The system is setup to do an automatic boot so we are not able to reload the OS so we can configure. WHat can we do so thatwe can log into it. It is useless cause of how it boots from the hard drive only. I don't have all of the facts but I see them beating themselves up for not knowing it all.

Unknown password for Sun box Help!!!

by robertdo In reply to Unknown password for Sun ...

Here's one way to solve it:

Go out to the hardware prompt (BIOS)
by hitting L1 (stop) and 'a' simultaneously.

From here you can choose to boot from a
different device, for instance a bootable
install CD. When the installation program
hasstarted, you can open a shell (command
tool) and edit the password/shadow/group
files to your liking.

If the 'box' is using YP or NIS/NIS+ you'll
have to disable that by putting 'files' first in your nsswitch.conf.

Sincerely, Robert.

Start up the system.
Use the L1 (Stop) A key combination to stop the boot process.
Make sure the Solaris cdrom is in and type at the OK prompt "boot cdrom -s"
When it boots up it will go into single user mode for the cdrom.
Mount the root partition on /a
ie: mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d3s0 /a
If tells you to fsck the disk, then do it first. fsck -y /dev/dsk/c0t0d3s0 then try mounting it again.
Once it is mounted, change directory to /a/etc. Edit the shadow file and remove the line for root. Reboot the machine. Root does not have a password. Make sure you give it one.
