unrecognizable file format

By arthur ·
We are encountering an error message from our Win2k Pro workstation whenever we try to open a picture file using PhotoEditor. The message is "unrecognizable file format". We can only open the file if the user is log on as administrator or power user. Why is that? Is this a bug?

PhotoEditor was probably loaded while using an administator's logon. This is not a bug. Remove PhotoEditor and then make the user part of the poweruser group. Reboot and logon using the user ID and password and then reload PhotoEditor.

The problem is not the file. It may be the photoeditor software or the path where the soft wants to create temporary files in order to do the undo function.

Hope it helps !

Here are a couple of things to check.

Open Windows Explorer
Find any .jpg (or other graphic extention) file
Right-click it to select it
Hold down the shift key and left-click the file
From the context menu choose "Open With"
Select "Microsoft Photoeditor"
Check the box to always use this program to open this type of file
hit the Enter key.

Another problem maybe in how PhotoEditor was installed.
MS has an article on this. Go to technet.microsoft.com and enter the following in the search box:

The Windows 2000 Pro operating system does not allow many applications and files to be shared between users. The only user(s) that have unrestricted access to applications and files would be the administrators and power users. It's not a bug, it'sa security thing established to prevent users from snooping around the system.

It is a W2k security issue. What has worked for us it to install it as Admin and then copy the admin profile to default user. Right click on my computer and then go to properties. Go to user profiles, copy to , C:\Documents and Settings\Default User (Default User is a hidden folder), change permitted to use to everyone. Anyone one has logged on to the PC, you will have to delete there profile. Another way to do this is make the user part of the admin group and then install the program. After you finish the install remove them from the admin group.
