updates despite death of XP maintenance

By john.a.wills ·
Every day my computer automatically restarts to incorporate updates, just as it did in the days when XP was maintained by Microsoft. Has Microsoft decided to keep on maintaining regardless, or is something sinister happening?

Every day???

Hmm, the only time my WinXP machines would restart for updates was on patch Tuesday,
unless there was an "out-of-bounds" critical update. It's possible your antivirus/antimalware
package is updating and restarting the system, that's about all I can think of off the top of
my pointed head. The only other thing I can think of is an incomplete update that is caught
in a loop. To get rid of that, go to the windows update website with Internet Explorer and
review update history. If there is one causing problems, disable it.

Update Stuck keep looping

Reset Windows update.
Run a command prompt and run Net stop bits. If there is an error stating this is already stopped this service should be running will slow computer way down if not. Go to service.msc (from run command) and find the Background Intelligent Service and make sure its set to start automatically so the computer starts it on boot.
Then go to C:\Windows and rename the System Distribution folder to oldupdate or something or move it delete it.
Go back to command prompt and run Net start bits.
Restart Computer then Restart windows update this will reset it and allow the updates to come down. Once all the update are installed it will stop.

Its also possible the updates just won't apply to your computer if that is the case tell windows update to not install the ones failing

Keep you Antivirus up to date.

Though today I did get a Update for IE8 on 3 XP Pro Systems. I know what it was to plug but I certainly didn't expect it to come.
