First things first....your HCL Issue (Hardware Compatibility List)....stick in the XP CD, and in the Autload menu, Run the Hardware Compatibility option. You can use this tool to scan your HP pavillion for all hardware that is compatible, and allhardware determined not compatible....non-compatible doesn't always mean it just flat won;t work, but it could be very unstable after upgrading to WindowsXP.

The newer the computer, the better off you are in finding that most of your internal andexternal devices will get along with Windows XP. Is it a Home or Pro version of XP?

Stick with Win ME. Win XP IS WIN NT, like WIN 2000

Won't work with lots of software/hardware. It is more basic, no scandisk uses chkdisk. Many problems with internal modems and other pnp devices. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Stick with Win ME,Though Win 98 is BEST. After Win 98 Microsoft started putting NT into the system.

Go to www.pcpitstop.com and run the XP compatability test.

This will tell you if you have any hardware or software conflicts.

One caveot, many people who have upgraded have had to format their hard drives and perform a fresh installation of XP.

So, back up any critical data and system settings before you start.

The more I use XP, the better I like it.
The only problem that I had was my USB Smart Media reader was not XP compatible.
The vendors response was to offer a new model thatis XP compatible!

The first suggestion on the list was correct. Check for compatibility. If you find that something is incompatible check to see if you can get drivers for that particular piece of hardware-If you can't get a driver decide if you are ready to upgrade that equipment. I have XP Pro, I installed it on an old Western Digital 3gig drive that had many errors just to see how it (XP) worked. It ran really fast and it is easy to use.
As far as not supporting a lot of software or hardware i have not found that to be the case-since you are using ME successfully all of your programs should also work on XP, afterall ME no longer supported DOS either (I suspect ME was the beginnings of merging the Operating Systems because Win ME interface looks almost like Win 2K)
-Oh by the way Windows XP Pro, although more expensive, is a better version than the Home Version. The Pro version is more appropriate for home networking, and if you find yourself having to reinstall it more than 3 times you won't have to go to Microsoft for a new id number- in the home version you have to call microsoft and explain why you have installed more than 3x to get a new product id#
Good Luck : - )

After all those great answers above. I would not upgrade from ME. I would do a clean XP install.
Just make sure you back-up all your stuff.
