Upgrading to Windows 98, from win 95

By OrionsFire ·
How to upgrade to a full version of Win98, Win95 full version is installed now. How can I upgrade w/o losing my files. It wants the upgrade version when trying to upgrade.

Try booting up with a boot disk loading your cd-rom drivers. Place your WIN98 cd in the drive and run setup. I have done this with the full retail version of WIN98 over WIN95 and it works good. It keeps the registry structure, so your software stays registered. I prefer to load 98 this way than to perform the upgrade.

win95 is already running so copy the cab files to a directory on your hard drive like
"c:\windows\options\cabs". Then restart in msdos mode. Change to the windows directory "cd \" "cd windows". Then rename the win.com file "ren win.com *.tst".Then change to the directory that you copied the cab files to "cd widnows\options\cabs". Then run setup with what ever options you might chose.

Go with answer 3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select one program at a time and click END TASK. End Task on everything except Explorer. That is Windows itself.
Then insert the Windows 98 disk. You can create a folder on you hard drive "Win98" and copy the contents of the Win98 folder on the CD to this new folder. Then choose Start/Run and browse to that folder and select Setup.exe.
But, when you insert the disk it will automatically come up asking you if you want to upgrade. Unless CD Autoplay has been disabled on your machine.
The HUGE advantage to copying the Win98 directory to your hard drive is that in the future if the computer needs the CD to install drivers or other things it will automatically access this folder instead you having to dig out the CD.

Your question is confusing. Are you asking how to upgrade or are you saying that when you try to upgrade its asking for upgrade verification?

Best, Glenn
