Urgent! Outlook 2k Problem

By reza168 ·
I have installed Exchange 5.5 SP3 on my PDC and when i connect locally its fine. The problem is when im using on the client side. i log on to the domain, everytime i start my Outlook 2k, asks a profile, and it gives an error message saying that the server is not responding in a timely fashion that an exchange server does not exist on the machine. When i retry it connects to the exchange server after a few seconds.

When i exit and log off the Outlook 2k and restart the same problem again it wants me to retry even though i have just disconnect from the exchange server.

Any ideas or solution for solving the 'retry' problem?

Thanx in advance.

Urgent! Outlook 2k Problem

by steve.hutson In reply to Urgent! Outlook 2k Proble ...

Hi,

You need to resolve the computer name more quickly. In the long term, you will want to check WINS or DNS, whichever name service you are using. You might also check how many browsers you are running. (You only need a few, but the Browser service is turned on by default in Windows NT both Workstation and Server.)

For the short term, modify the HOSTS file on your client in C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\etc. I am assuming you are on NT, rather than W2K. In Win9x, there is also a template Hosts file, named hosts.sam. I don't recall its exact location, but you can use Find to locate it.
Edit the HOSTS file (in Win9X, you will also have to rename it from Hosts.sam to Hosts) like:
ComputerName 111.111.111.111
where ComputerName is theExchange Server's name and 111.111.111.111 is its IP address.

Hope this helps,

Steve

You can read about why, but the answer to you question is, either install DNS server or get all the machines to use LMHost. Outlook looks for exchange by first using DNS
or LMhost. DNS is the best solution.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem. After I set up a WINS server it solved all my problems. I would try add WINS to a domain controller.
