usb external hard drive reports no media on XP computer management

By dickgb ·
I had the usb drive successfully installed on my XP machine. I used half for backups for my XP data and the other half for fedora 7. When I tried to install ubuntu something go scrambled on the usb drive. Windows could not see the drive at all. When I ran ubuntu-live, I was able to see the XP data but could not see the other partition. In my (unsuccessful) efforts to retrieve the data I managed to lose ALL the data. So I formatted the drive using ubuntu but it could not access the drive when I was finished. Windows can now see the drive using computer management but it displays "no media". The drive does not display on My Computer. I would greatly appreciate a way to restore the usb drive.

Ubuntu creates 3 Partitions on the HDD

Which Windows can not read to use this HDD with Windows it needs to be formatted with either a FAT32 or NTFS Partition not NSF Partitions.

To use this drive with Windows you'll need to wipe the drive with a Wiping utility like Boot & Nuke

http://www.dban.org/

Then restart Windows plug in the external Drive and go to Drive Management then Prepare and Format the HDD. After that it will be visible in Explorer or My Computer and be usable with Windows.

1.- command prompt
2.- diskpart

4.- exit
if your usb appears as a volume of 0 bytes
