USB Hubs

by TheChas In reply to USB Hubs

There is not a lot to a USB hub. The "best value", will be the least expensive hub that meets your needs.

There are a few questions that come to mind:

Do you need a powered hub?

Does it need to be USB 2.0 compliant?

How many ports do you need?

When I need a hub, I just see what I can get at www.compgeeks.com

Right now, they have a powered 2.0 hub for $19.
Un-powered hubs start at $6

My personal recommendation is that you get a powered hub.

You can buy generic usb hubs for as little as $5.00. Not that I am recommending these.

The most problem I have had in the usb department is from cheap units.

This is my take on the subject.

Desktop:
If you have a pci slot add a usb card. Via makes a good one.
Reason:
A lot of equipment will not work through a hub. Go figure. It reduces the clutter on the table or desktop.

If you use a hub use a name brand. Linksys, Dlink, 3com, even Belkin.

Hp and others make keyboards with hubs built in. But these require lines to come to the keyboard.

Good Luck Lee
