USB Modem

By kmatabula ·
My recently purchased ELSA usb modem relies on PC power, but does not power on when correctly connected to the PC running win 2000 Pro, though the port is working properly in the device manager.

USB Modem

Do other USB devices work?

If not, the USB port may not be properly enabled, or the drivers may not be installed.

Are you using the USB ports on the back of the PC, or ports on the front of the case?

Check in BIOS settings that the port that you are connected to is enabled.
If you are using USB ports that are anywhere other then on the ATX connector panel, you may want to open the case, and verify that the cable is connected properly.

I have seen at least 3 different USB header pin-outs on different motherboards, so you may need to verify the motherboards correct pin-out.

If that is fine, some motherboards do NOT supply enough current on the 5 volt line on the USB ports. The answer then, is to install a powered USB hub.

Also, for MANY USB devices, you need to install the driver software before plugging the device into the port.
