USB Printer on Win Terminal.

By justin.dickon ·
Hi,

I have a Compaq Evo T30 Windows terminal with a HP Laserjet 1000 printer that can only connect using USB. The terminal is connected to Windows 2000 Terminal server with service pack 3.

As per Microsoft documentation, printer redirection for a USB printer on a windows terminal is not supported...

The HP 1000 does not support any other way of connecting instead of the USB port.

There doesn't seem to be anyway to tell the terminal (the Compaq T30) that it has a printer on its USB port, only via LPT or COM.

Does anyone know of any way around this?

Thanks
Justin

Can you add a convertor, or hub?

Unfortuntely, there doesn't seem to be a converter for this particular printer... and using a hub with external print server will add to the cost quite significantly - we are going to end up with a few of these... but probably not with this printer unless we can get it going as is.

I don't know if this will work but you might try using the dos command on the Compaq NET USE \\LPTn:\computername\printername /persistent:yes
Then, on your printer setup, set the port to LPTn.

The following might work:
On the client machine make sure that driver the printer is using is HP Laser Jet (not anything more than that). If it doesn't than change the driver to HP Laser Jet (that is shipped with Windows). Try printing a test page localy, if it works than it means that this driver works with your printer (you might however loose some advanced functions with this printer). Set it as the defautl printer. Now connect to Terminal Server and check if it works.
Another think to be aware of, is ot make sure that your printer is networkable. If you printer cannot be shared (some printers can't) than you will never be able to print to it from Terminal Server.

WYSE Winterms can use either the USB port for the printer or LPT1 port. Think it is handling the redirection internally.
