Users have trouble downloading docs

By chipw ·
I have a corporate web site which has a database (mysql) of documentation available for end-users. These docs are .pdf's of product manuals. I am able to download without any problem, both from home and from the office. I received a message from an end-user complaining she gets only the first 7 pages (quoted from her message to me) -
I was able to successfully download a 278 page IRS document. So my computer settings should be fine. I also tried your site again this morning and it stopped after page six. I also tried on another machine on our network, a windows 98 machine with adobe 4.0, and the same thing happened. The error message is "a file I/O error has occurred. The file connection timed out." I'm using internet explorer 5.5, windows 2000 and adobe 5.0. Any
suggestions?"
I have never seen the file I/O error before when downloading from a web site. Any ideas what could be her problem?
My server is apache-1.3.14, php-4.0.3pl1, mysql-3.23.41 running on FreeBSD-4.2 all running on an AMD 800mhz Athlon box with 128 megs ram.
The address is www.simradusa.com, then click on Tech Support/FAQ's, then choose Autopilots and this person is having problems with the AP11 Manual. (Once again, I had no problem downloading and reading it on my FreeBSD box at home).

I think the user choose "Open this file from its current location" instead "Save this file to disk", when down loading file.
Ask user Download the file to the local hard drive first, the open.

You need to increase the timeout period on your web server. The web server documentation should detail how you can do this.

I changed the time-out setting in apache, from 300 to 600, and it appears to not have helped. Could someone please try to access this one particular file with both netscape and IE? the link is http://www.simradusa.com/ then click on Tech Support/FAQ's then Autopilots. The file in question is the second one listed - AP11 Manual. It works fine from within the local net, I downloaded it on my freebsd machine at home and it loaded in acroreader just fine. I got another end-user complain (IE6) that it just locked up the browser. I don't understand why IE would have such trouble with one file. I don't believe it happens with other files. Maybe someone could try a few and let me know the results? Thanks for the help.
