Using Rundll.exe and user.exe to shutdow

By petrosi ·
Excuse me for lack of teminology but I am not a programmer by trade.
I picked up a command line "rundll.exe user.exe, exitwindows" that shuts down Windows 95 0r 98 by clicking on a shortcut that has this line as the command line.

Is there one that will allow me to run it and have the desktop close and be replaced by the Microsoft Windows Network logon screen?
Could you point out a good source for rundll.exe, user.exe and other such commands., Thanks for your thoughts.

Using Rundll.exe and user.exe to shutdow

by eusebio In reply to Using Rundll.exe and user ...

To exit the desktop (actually this will restart the GUI too) you can use:

rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec

To find out 'funny' commands you can make a copy of user.exe, open it with Word and take a look at the recoognizable text. Most of the available commands don't make any sense when called from a shortcut. Also, in the Platform SDK documentation available online (after registration) at the MSDN library http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.htmyou should find more documentation about the commands in user.exe, kernel.exe and gdi.exe although the names for calling the functions from the SDK and calling them directly may have some differences.

rundll.exe does just what its name says it runs a dll (user.exe is a dll 'disguised' as an exe)

Happy hacking...

The commands are (case and space sensitive):

To shutdown:
rundll32.exe user.exe,exitwindows

To restart:
rundll32.exe user.exe,restartwindows

You can find a list of known commands at http://www.mvps.org/vb/.

'Y'all' and other collective nouns

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Using Rundll.exe and user ...

'Y'all' immediately identifies one as being from the southeastern United States, a.k.a. as a 'Southerner'. Southerners long ago realized the confusion caused by having the same word ('you') serve as both second-person singular and plural and use this handy contraction ('you all') instead.

Other parts of the U.S. have implemented multiple-word phrases for the second person plural, include the clearly less sophisticated 'youse guys'.
