Verifying DMI Pools

By ReJette ·
I have Win98 and needed to get rid of a virus. So I cleaned the harddrive and now need to reformat. I ran fdisk and deleted and the partition and re-created it. Now I want to reformat the harddrive; but when I insert the floppy in Drive A and with WIN98 2nd edition in the CD-ROM, and then boot up the system, it only gets to the part that says "Verifying DMI Pools". How can I get un-hung from this part of the booting? and What does it mean any way? Thanks!

Check your RAM modules.

Even though they count up in the POST RAM test, they could have problems.
The simplest fix, is to remove and re-seat them in the sockets.

I have had this problem with RAM that was only marginally compatible with the motherboard also.
So, if you have added RAM recently, it may not be 'fully' compatible with either the existing RAM or the MB.

Also, there is a W98 bug for more than 511MB of RAM. If you were running more than 511MB of RAM, reduce RAM to 256MB, install Windows, then try adding the extra RAM back in.

It is also possible that 1 or more RAM chips are going bad.

DMI means Desktop Management Interface. Boot your machine without the CD in it. Make sure your BIOS is not set to boot from CD, instead, from floppy first. Also, make sure your BIOS has PnP OS turned on. After you have successfully re-partitioned and re-formatted your hard drive then set the BIOS to boot from CD.

I'm an idiot. You said you booted with a floppy, but not what kind? You also don't mention if any hardware changes have been made.
