The best way to determine whether you have a monitor problem or a video card problem... is to take the monitor to another computer and see how it works. If the problem follows the monitor, then it is a monitor problem. The chances are greater for a monitor problem than for a video problem because of heat, dust and the electricity that illuminates the tube.

Also, you may be able to identify monitor problems as they progessively get worse as they heat up, or continue to be used. Some monitors will start emmitiong high-pitched sounds. Horizontal or vertical adjustments will vary as the monitor gets worse.

There's deadly charges running through monitors even when unplugged. The tube needs to be discharged CAREFULLY... I do not recommend that anyone does this without specific instruction and a safe location with other people around... just in case.

As Anna said, the best thing to do, is to swap the monitor.

As to repairing a monitor, there is a 35,000 volt DC charge on the CRT and flyback power supply.

At the cost of new monitors, it is not as cost effective as you may think to even attempt repair.

If the problem is much beyond a bad solder connection, it is just to hard and expensive to get parts.

Many of the parts are "custom" "proprietary" parts, and the only source is the factory that made the monitor.

Only the highest quality monitors are worth repairing. IF you know what you are doing (or someone has shown you how) you can safely discharge the monitor before working on it. Give the points to Anna though, she said it right.
