Viewing 2 different domains on a network

    Locked

    by kashmeir63 ·

    Hi,
I have two sites. Connected Via a firewall. They are two different domains. One domain is a windows 2000 server the other is a windows nt4.0.
I can ping both ways via address and name. I tried building a trust but I’m having alot of issues. Is there a way to see both domains on both computer servers and client computers via Network neighborhood? I’m I missing something? Any help would be apprciated. Thank You in advance

      Your required ports are:

      LDAP (389 UDP and TCP)
      Microsoft SMB (445 TCP)

      Kerberos (88 UDP)

Endpoint resolution ? portmapper (135 TCP) Net Logon fixed port

Windows NT Server 4.0 directory service fixed port

Most likley ports 135-138 are blocked, as having these open can be dangerous in allowing hackers access to Windows networks. Check with security/firewall administrators if this is even allowable (at most organizations it is not.)

In the event your trust is a no-go at race day, then you will want to be looking at either Citrix MetaFrame or Terminal server as a solution.

A bit more info would be good here:

      “Connected Via a firewall”?

Is it a VPN tunnel or are they public ips or what?

What are you doing to try the trust and what are the “issues”?

After the trust is setup then deal with the rest. The network
Neighborhood is a GUI of the Browse List. Each domain has a
Domain Master Browser which in a domain is always the PDC
unless otherwise configured. So, each domain has its own.
Because one is NT, I would setup WINS on both ends and have
the 2 servers push/pull each other. That way you could just map
needed paths and they could be easily resolve using the local
      WINS.

Get back on those questions and lets get you up and running,

we may also have to create static wins records for the netbios name of each domain. sometimes NT 4 and 2k have domain trusts issues..

Yes, I have 2 firewalls connected to each other to create a vpn tunnel between the 2 servers. I’m trying to establish a 2 way trust between the servers. I’am able to ping by name and ip., from one server to other. When setting up the win. 2000 trust(domains trusted by this domain) I get: The nt4.0 domain cannot be contacted. I get the same mesasage when from the 2000 server. Domains that rust this domain. I hope this is clear. Thanks in advance

If you can ping by name and ip then the vpn is fine and it would
appear that name resolution is, but I agree with Bill that setting
up WINS on both ends with static entries would be a good idea.

      Hi,
On the windows 2000 server which is running wins, I can add the nt4.0 wins server. It appears to working okay. On the nt4.0 wins server, when I try to add the wind. 2000 wins server, it cannot find it either by name or ip. Yet from a command prompt on the nt4.0 server I can ping the wind. 2000 server by ip address and name. Any help would be appreciated

What I’m also trying to accomplish is being able (through network neighborhood) to see both domains. Any help would appreciated
