Virtual Box: Is it any good?

By andrewchristiandc ·
Hey gang,

I was thinking of trying a new virtual machine software called Virtual Box.

http://www.virtualbox.org/

Has anyone heard anything good or bad about it? Any personal experience you'd like to share?

Virtual Box

by Jon In reply to Virtual Box: Is it any go ...

Hello,

I have personally been running it for about 6 months on Ubuntu. There are a lot of things that must be manually configured , such as config files so that things may work properly. If you have the time to work out the bugs it is great, though if you are using it on windows I'm not sure how well it responds. A guy in one of my grad classes last semester had some troubles with it so he went to Virtual PC. Their forums should be able to answer any of your questions, so I would say try it out, whats the worst that can happen, it's open source.

by Innotek, which apparently SunMS bought out. I'm just fiddling in VM's for the first time, but I'm finding it relatively easy to configure and use.

edit: on Ubuntu anyway. I haven't tried it on Windows.

I've also been using it for about Six months but on Windows XP.

It's not the easiest thing in the world to configure but if you take your time reading the help and experimenting, you can get it to work.

I used to use multiple partitions and a boot manager (XOSL) but now I just fire up a virtual W2K or W98 or Ubuntu (that one was fun!) when I want to try something out.
