Virtual Networking

By crazyman ·
I got VMWare working about a week ago and successfully got win95 running ontop of my XFree86 desktop. According to all the documentatin, Linux is supposed to emulate an ethernet card on /dev/vmnet0 for bridged networking with the guest operating system (win95, in this case). My problem, is that Linux can't emulate the ether card, and consequently win95 can't detect it. If anyone can help me, I'de be much appreciated. By the way, if you want to take a look atteh documentation or even look at the program so that you can understand it better, vmware can be found at www.vmware.com. Thanks!

You should specify more information about your system. On two of my systems, I just installed VMWare, ran Windows setup, and the network card was auto-detected by Windows. I actually have a physical ethernet card in my system(a 3com Vortex in onesystem, and an NE2000 clone in another). Type ifconfig as root and look to see what network cards are setup. I assume networking is functioning properly in Linux? If not, then you should look there. Also check the configuration for the virtual machine. There are options to enable or disable devices in there.

Also, if you have updated your kernel to a newer version than when you installed vmware, be sure to copy the modules from /lib/modules/<old kernel version>/misc to your new kernel version. The filesbegin with 'vm'.

Ihave a physical ethernet card (ne2000 and 3C590) and ATM ForeRunner in my systems.
I'm install vmware, and set guest os Windows95.Windows setup non-detect ethernet card. I'm set manual "AMD PCNET Family Ethernet (PCI&ISA). It's work! For more - pleas contact me.
