Virus c:\winnt\explorer\explorer.exe

By airforceone42 ·
On my 900 Athlon, Win XP, i recently received the following error message (via Norton Antivirus 2002):

Norton has detected a virus on your computer.

Object name: c:\winnt\explorer\explorer.exe
Virus name: Backdoor.Trojan
Action taken: Unable to repair this file.

My question is, with the importance of this file in mind, what's the best course of action in fixing this? If I delete it (or move it), what's the best way to reinstall JUST that file (which is an integral part of the operating system).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Joe

Joe:

Win WindowsNT, Explorer.exe is the basic File management explorer that comes packaged with Win NT and Win XP. It is a stand alone executable, which I am almost sure of can be replaced, especially if you got the file off of another Windows XP box, or perhaps extracted from a CAB file on the XP install disk. Try copying it onto disk and transfering it over when you find it.

Sounds like Norton 2002 picked up on this disguise version of 'explorer.exe' as a trojan horse replacement. Are you having any buggy type behavior going on? Lockups? BSOD's?

Try a Trojan Remover application to get a second opinion on the situation. I believe, that in the meantime, if you had to REMOVE explorer.exe, you XP machine could get by without it for a while. Here is one particular site on Trojan Removal:

Backdoor.Trojan is a generic name for this intruder.
Notice that "c:\winnt\explorer\explorer.exe" is not a valid path it s/b "c:\winnt\explorer.exe"
The Symantec site has some instructions on removing the trojan file. Another site is www.moosoft.com
Good luck
