W2K can't logon

By coax4u ·
Why after months of using W2K you get a message that comes up when the logon box first appears, another box with an ! that states you are using an incorrect password & make sure you don't use capitalization ? No matter what you do you can't get intothe desktop? How can this be solved short of reinstalling W2K?

you could possibly boot to specially made setup floppies that allow you to change the administrator password. the utility edits SAM directly.

email me for further assistance...

Have you tried login as administrator or guest. Perhaps one of these two were set to not require a password?

If you have a copy of Winternals ERD Commander you could boot up and change the password of any account.

Or you could just boot up using the offline NT password floppy. It works great on NT and 2K.

Here is the link for the floppy:

Hope that helps.

If it's Win2k Pro, I believe that by default, the Administrator password is blank (that is, unless you changed it). Try logging on as Administrator and leave the password field blank. If this logs you on, go to Computer Management, Users, get the Properties of your user and change it so that your password never expires and/or reset your password by right clicking on your account and choosing Reset Password.

As this was a120 day trial version, I forgot to change password never expires, so after reloading W2k , I made sure I did it this time. Thanks

The problem may be the NetLogon service.

I had a problem similar to this where I couldn't logon with any other account besides Administrator. I logged on and restarted the netlogon service and all was well.

Or you may have actually forgotten your password. If that's the case, Winternals locksmith is the answer for you ;-)
